What do we want to achieve and how?

This video explains how the waking project aims to achieve our central goal of creating a safe, convenient & enjoyable walking environment in Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Why walkability?

Walkability is THE simplest solution to a lot of our urban and societal problems in the 21st century, hence it is important to prioritize it as a legitimate way of societal change and tangible quality of life improvement for the city of Mumbai. Here are some of the ways walkability stands to improve our human experience.

1. Climate Change: Walkability plays a crucial role in addressing climate change. By encouraging walking as a mode of transportation, cities can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease reliance on cars, and mitigate the environmental impact of transportation systems.

2. Safety: Walkability enhances pedestrian safety by providing well-designed infrastructure, such as sidewalks, crosswalks, and traffic calming measures. Creating safe walking environments reduces the risk of accidents and improves overall road safety.

3. Pollution: Promoting walking as a transportation option helps combat pollution. By reducing the number of motorized vehicles on the road, walkability contributes to improving air quality and decreasing noise pollution, creating cleaner and healthier urban environments.

4. Economics: Walkable neighborhoods have economic benefits. They attract foot traffic, support local businesses, and contribute to economic vitality. Proximity to amenities and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure enhances property values and fosters economic growth.

5. Health: Walkability directly impacts public health. By encouraging physical activity, it helps combat sedentary lifestyles, obesity, and related health issues. Regular walking promotes cardiovascular health, weight management, mental well-being, and overall fitness.

6. Social Benefits: Walkability enhances social connectivity and community engagement. Pedestrian-friendly environments create opportunities for social interaction, spontaneous encounters, and the development of strong community bonds. This fosters a sense of belonging and improves overall social well-being.

By prioritizing walkability in cities, we can effectively address climate change, improve safety, reduce pollution, stimulate economic growth, promote public health, and enhance social connections. These combined benefits make walkability an essential factor for cities to consider as they plan for a sustainable and livable future.
